Buying cat food online

I got to thinking the other day about buying cat food online.

One of those thoughts was, “I’ll bet Amazon sells cat food that the United States Post Office will deliver.”  Then I asked myself, “is there an advantage to having your cat food delivered?”

My oldest son is the one who planted this seed in my head.  He is a dog owner, who ordered dog food from Amazon, but it had to be delivered to my house because the United States Postal Service does not deliver to the remote area of the county where he lives.

As I conducted a little research into this question, I first learned that having cat food delivered is becoming more and more popular.  Especially in this modern age of computers and fast-paced life.  It seems that with just a click of a button, you can have your cat’s food on its way while you sleep.  Also, there are many brands, types, flavors, and formulas to choose from on the internet.  I particularly like Amazon.  They seem to be the most consistent.  So as I researched this major decision and before I ordered anything online, I wanted to weigh the positives and negatives to make sure it is something I feel comfortable doing.

First, there is the variety and selection of the different brands available.  In the online world, I can find anything from mainstream selections to gourmet cat foods.  The options are almost limitless.  While something may sound good to me, I always have to think about my cat.  I asked the question, is this something my cat will eat?  Is it healthy for my cat to eat?  Those are two of the most important questions a person can ask when deciding what type of food to purchase.  You might consider differing this question to your veterinarian who could give you the advice of a professional.  I know as our cat aged, its food options changed.  Even as our cat began to experience health problems, the veterinarian actually prescribed certain types of foods.  Some considerations in this category could include, specialty diets such as grain-free, or even gluten-free.  Your vet will know what is best, and remember, just because you may not eat certain foods, your cat may need to eat those particular foods.

I’m sure we have all seen the old commercial on television about “Morse” the “finicky” cat.  I know every cat is finicky to some degree.  Just because you think it is something you should or want to be feeding, may not be what your little furry friend should be eating or want to be eating.  They may enjoy one particular texture over another.  Our cat loved pates and would turn her nose at anything with gravy.  Most of the time, it is best to let them decide what they want to eat.  You might have to experiment a little, but once you have something they like, most cats rarely like changes in their diet.

Another consideration when deciding to order cat food online is the convenience and accessibility.  It has never been easier to make purchases online from the comfort and safety of your own home or apartment.  You can do this anytime, night or day, dressed or in your underwear. (Try buying cat food in your underwear.  They even frown on this at Walmart.)  For those of us who are very busy with life, it makes perfect sense to order online.  Some online vendors may even offer cat food subscriptions so you do not have to ever worry about running out.

The other nice thing about shopping online for cat food is the ability to compare prices.  Oftentimes, I find discounts or some online marketers offering discounts.  Shop around and find what you want for the price you want.  Just make sure you are buying a reputable brand.

Online buying also allows you to take your time and read product reviews and other important product information.  You can even find forums or start one, where you will be able to discuss the benefits of one cat food over another.  Most people I know, who buy their cat food at the store, simply grab something off the shelf and toss it into their shopping cart.  Never once do they take the time to see what its ingredients are.

When buying cat food online, make sure you will be getting your order in a timely manner.  If you are buying fresh meats and vegetables, you do not want them to arrive spoiled or spoil before your cat can enjoy it.

Lastly, please keep an eye on your cat.  Especially if you are changing its food.  Make sure it is eating; looking healthy; still active and playful.  Look for anything out of the ordinary and immediately begin to suspect it could be because of a change in their diet.

Remember to do your research before buying online.  Make sure it is the right decision for you and your little furry friend.

I even feed the stray cats, but I am not as picky about what brand of cat food they eat.
