Is Pet Insurance worth it or What is the cost of not having Pet Insurance?

Hi, it’s Alan with another post for the mews and world report.  This time it’s about the need for Pet Insurance.

I could be callous and say, “They’re just animals,” but we know our furry friends are more than just animals.  They are our friends.  Sometimes, our best friends who seem more like cherished members of our families.  They provide companionship, love and joy.  Half the time, we even start talking for them as if they had a voice.

With this kind of relationship, comes significant responsibilities.  Not only must we ensure they are fed and watered, have a comfortable and clean place to sleep, but we are also responsible for their health and wellbeing.

As part of taking responsibility for the health and wellbeing of our furry friends, we need to consider what is crucial and that is Pet Insurance.  Having Pet Insurance is an integral part of being a pet owner.  I want to list the top 7 reasons for having Pet Insurance in today’s world.

  1. Financial protection:

As with any insurance, we buy it to help offset any catastrophic costs associated with our lives.  Automobile insurance helps replace damaged vehicles or helps cover medical expenses for an accident caused by you or an uninsured driver.  Having this insurance brings peace of mind and just like automobile insurance, Pet Insurance can and will do the same thing.  As an example, you have a beloved cat who is aging and starts to appear ill.  You take it to the vet who tells you, your furry friend has diabetes.  Under normal circumstances without Pet Insurance, you would be out the thousands of dollars for the cost of care and treatment.  This scenario is not out of the ordinary.  It does not have to be an illness.  What about an accident.  Say your furry friend loses a fight with a dog or car and has to receive expensive veterinary care.  With Pet Insurance, the extremely expensive burden of care, is lifted from your shoulders, allowing you to make wise healthcare decisions instead of just saying it’s time to put your friend to sleep.  Believe me, having this luxury brings peace of mind.

2. Coverage options:

Just like health insurance for humans, Pet Insurance can be tailored to suit your needs and budget.  There are various types of coverages available, including accident-only policies, illness policies, and comprehensive plans that cover both accidents and illnesses. Some policies even offer coverage for routine care, such as vaccinations, dental care, and preventive treatments.

Typically, accident only policies are more affordable and are a very good option for younger, more healthier pets.  Typically, illness policies would be more geared toward older pets or pets prone to specific health conditions.  And, comprehensive plans, which are often the most expensive, also offer the most extensive coverage.  These packages ensure your pet is able to receive the care they need throughout their lives.

The flexibility of coverage options allow the pet owner to choose the best plan for their situation and budget.

3. Early Diagnosis and Preventative care:

Have you ever had a situation where you knew your furry friend was not feeling well and thought, “Oh it’ll just get over it.”  Well, with some Pet Insurance plans, there is never a need to feel this way again.  Once you notice your furry friend feeling ill or behaving differently, instead of thinking a trip to the vet is too expensive, some Pet Insurance plans allow for these types of diagnostic visits.  Often times, this early diagnosis means the difference between treatment and survival or treatment then eventual euthanasia.

I used the example of diabetes earlier and this is a perfect example where early diagnosis can be lifesaving.  Pet owners who have Pet Insurance are far more likely to seek veterinary care at the first sign of a problem, rather than delaying due to cost concerns.  Seeking treatment early not only improves the quality of life for your pet, but also helps avoid more expensive treatments down the road.

4. Peace of Mind

I know I mentioned this earlier, but it is so important, I felt the need to mention it again.  If you have ever had a pet for any length of time, you know the emotional investment you have in this creature.  As I said, they become part of your family.  In some cases, part of your identity.

Pet Insurance provides peace of mind, knowing that you are prepared for unexpected health issues.  The emotional stress of dealing with a sick or injured pet is compounded by financial worries when you are unprepared.  With Pet Insurance, you can focus on providing the best possible care for your pet without the added stress of financial constraints.

And please note that this peace of mind extends beyond just emergency situations.  Knowing that routine care and preventive treatments are covered allows pet owners to provide consistent, high-quality care for their pets.  This reassurance is invaluable, as it contributes to your overall wellbeing as well as the wellbeing and longevity of your furry friend.

5. Coverage for Chronic and Hereditary Conditions:

I know we often times take our furry friends for granted, but in reality, they are really no different than humans in that they can suffer from chronic or inherited conditions.

Having a condition such as this can result in regular and even expensive care and treatment.  A good example of this can be found in certain dog breeds where hip-dysplasia is common.

Just the daily medications for this and other conditions can be budget-breaking.  Some Pet Insurance policies can provide coverage for these long-term health issues, ensuring that pets receive the necessary care without causing financial strain on their owners.

6. Access to advanced Treatment:

I live in Washington State and about 3 hours from my house is Washington State University (WSU), a college very famous for its veterinary program.  Many veterinarians throughout the northwest routinely refer some of their more difficult cases to WSU.  When I was a youngster, I remember one of our family’s horses was sent there.  As a young teenager, we had to send another horse there.  My brother’s wife has a black lab who has been referred to WSU several times.  These referrals are not cheap, but I am sure they have prolonged the lives of the animals and pets who have been treated by this wonderful university.  One of the absolute best beauties of Pet Insurance is that it can make some, if not all of these cutting-edge options more accessible, allowing pet owners to take advantage of the latest medical advancements.  I think this also goes back to the Peace of Mind topic.

7. Plans can be tailored, depending on your needs:

As with most human insurance plans, Pet Insurance companies proved a wide range of options or plans to suit your specific needs or budget.  The pet owner is able to consider everything from their budget, the age of their pet and even existing medical conditions when making this decision.  This flexibility makes buying Pet Insurance a commonsense decision for any responsible pet owner.

By carefully selecting a policy that matches your pet’s health profile and your financial situation, you can maximize the benefits of Pet Insurance while keeping premiums affordable.

If you don’t remember anything else from this post, please remember that Pet Insurance is an essential tool for responsible pet ownership.  It offers financial protection, comprehensive coverage options, and provides for the peace of mind for early diagnosis and preventive care. Pet Insurance can cover chronic and hereditary conditions, and has the ability to grant access to advanced treatments.  The ability to tailor plans to suit different needs makes Pet Insurance a flexible and valuable investment.  By investing in Pet Insurance, you are ensuring that your furry friend receives the best possible care throughout their life, safeguarding both their health and your finances.
